Middle School/Junior High Mission Statement And Instructional Overview

 I. It is the mission of the Middle School/Junior High Catechetical Program of St. Mary of the Purification to further the faith journey of 6th, 7th, and 8th grade youth. These years are the connecting bridge between the formation of faith that occurs after the Sacrament of First Holy Communion and continues through the Sacrament of Confirmation. The intent is to foster a better understanding of the place of the Holy Scripture and our faith traditions our Liturgy of the Word and Eucharist.

Tools used on this faith walk include:

      • Textbooks and Handouts

      • Bible, Sacraments and the Creeds,

      • Church documents such as the Catechism of the Catholic Church

      • Traditions of the Church.

This program is complemented by Archdiocesan and other faith-based youth activities. These activities are consistent with the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops’Renewing the Vision: A Framework for Catholic Youth Ministry and the National Catechetical Directory for Catholics of the United States. Because individuals have different learning styles, a multi-media team approach is used.

The program earmarks each year as an opportunity to look as certain aspects of our Triune God:

6th Grade – The study of the Old Testament includes discussions that center on the leadership of Abraham, Moses, David and their role in the history of God’s people; as well as Isaiah, Prophets, and Messianic Promise. Students will be encouraged to identify a psalm that speaks to their faith journey.

7thGrade – The study of the New Testament will center on the four Gospels and the Acts of the Apostles and the letters (Epistles). Students will look at the historical setting of Israel at the time of the birth, death and resurrection of Jesus, through their review of the New Testament.

8thGrade – Both Semesters will focus on the Creeds which are a profession of our faith and are a natural progression from the New Testament. Students will spend more time with the traditions of the Church as well as Catholic Social Teaching.

This program understands that the family is the domestic church- the original teacher of children (CCC# 2207) and is committed to assisting each family unit in the furtherance of the education and evangelization of our young people faith.
