Archciocesan Youth Conference 2016

Attendees: Bree Rodriguez, Alexandria Gordan and Marjani Myles
Carson Brown, Austin Johnson and Reed Thornton (my assistant)
This past August, St. Mary of the Purification youth attended the Archdiocesan Youth Conference (AYC) , a 3-day celebration hosted by the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston for high school-age youth. There were approximately 2,700 youth in attendance. The theme this year was “Blessed”. Our youth had an exciting time with other Catholic teens from various parishes throughout the Archdiocese. They were engaged through prayer, music, the Word, evangelization, catechesis, sacraments, and service. Personally I found it to be very overwhelming just to see young people (especially our teens) just let go and begin praising God. Without any prompting, our youth participated in the Divine Mercy Chaplet. They approached and went forward to be close on their knees to adore the Blessed Sacrament. All of the youth of the Archdiocese were fully engaged to be filled with God’s grace.
They participated in many sessions.  However one of the most inspiring talks was on Temptations, given by Evangelist Stephen McMullen, who came in from the East Coast. Our kids really devour the speaker message on Prayer and protecting themselves.

This was my first time at AYC and it was beyond my expectations. I had already thought it was wonderful that there was a conference dedicated to people who solely practice Catholicism, but when I got to experience the conference it left a huge impression on me. It was a great way to network with other catholic teens and still get closer to God in a fun way. The conference had a wonderful feel to it, it was not a very strict conference and they allowed you to flow in and out when you wanted at the appropriate times. The weekend I spent there really opened my eyes to different things that I struggle with as a teenager and how to overcome those challenges with God in my mind. I truly enjoyed my time there and would go back!!"

AYC was such an enriching experience. I have been to many of the conferences before, but this one was definitely one of the best. One thing I really got from the conference was a better understanding catholic beliefs on abortion, as well as my own.

Very inspirational

My experience was uplifting. He (Stephen McMullen) related his story to everyday things that us teenagers go through every day. Anything I really enjoyed is how he put God first in his life when times were rough and never gave up and just kept pushing and having faith.
Dear St. Mary’s,
My name is Austin Johnson, I attended AYC in August 2016. It was a good experience. It taught me a lot about Jesus and how to get closer to him. I attended different people and they taught me about different things leading up to Jesus; and when we were in that big room with everybody they had speakers and artist teaching and sing about Jesus. I learned how powerful prayer is. It was the best the best thing to go to if you want to know more about, or get closer to God.

AYC was definitely worth going to for me. It was a great experience. The overall best part for me was meeting other Catholic teens and seeing friends who I didn't know were Catholic before.
